Councilman Elvis R. Maldonado, Honorary Chairman for the Relay for Life 2013 of Homestead and Florida City, recognized the team of volunteers who made this year’s Relay for Life a success. Among those individuals who were honored for their commitment in the fight against cancer was CEO of Homestead Hospital Baptist Health Bill Duquette, who allowed the event to be held in the grounds of the Hospital.
“Bill Duquette and his staff did a wonderful job hosting this year’s Relay For Life event at Homestead Hospital Baptist Health.,” said Councilman Maldonado at the Special Presentation during the June 19 Homestead City Council meeting. “I will always be appreciative of the work he has done and for the personal commitment he has for his community, Homestead is lucky to have him.”
Councilman Maldonado presented Mr. Duquette with an award for hosting the event and for his support of Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society. Certificates of appreciation were also awarded to Relay For Life Committee Member Event Chair Yvette Ortiz, Team Development Michael Hitt, Team Development Co-Chair Jeri-Ann Winterstein, Student Team Development Katelyn Bourke, Operations Chair Maria Bello, Operations Co-Chair Michelle Kostowic, Fundraising Chair Maria Lora, Online Fundraising Chair Jennifer Lora, Mission Education Chair Jennifer DeSousa, Survivor Chair Nancy Bourke, Survivor Co-Chair Wendy Springer, Luminaria Chair Barbara Drago, Logistics Chair Kristine Fernandez, Activities/Entertainer Chair Diane O’Connor, Staff Partner Jose Bowles, Caregiver Chair Kenneth Bourke, and Sponsorship Chair William Lora.
“The 2013 Relay For Life Team did an amazing job this year and I am proud to recognize them,” said Councilman Maldonado. “All of these individuals have had someone in their lives that has been affected by Cancer. And have heard the call to get involved and give their time and energy to do whatever was needed to make this year’s Relay For Life a success and continue the fight against Cancer.”
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, and take turns walking or running around a track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, participants light hundreds of luminary candles around the track in a moving ceremony honoring cancer survivors as well as remembering those lost to the disease. It is an opportunity to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back.
