Veterans’ Preference Policy
The City of Homestead is committed to supporting veterans and their families by adhering to Florida’s Veterans’ Preference law in its hiring processes. This policy ensures eligible veterans receive priority consideration for employment, provided they meet the minimum qualifications for the position.
Who Qualifies for Veterans’ Preference?
Preference is extended to the following individuals:
• Veterans with service-connected disabilities.
• Spouses of veterans unable to work due to a service-connected disability or missing in action.
• Wartime veterans honorably discharged or those awarded qualifying medals.
• Un-remarried spouses or parents of service members who died in combat-related circumstances.
• Current members of reserve components or the Florida National Guard.
How Preference is Applied
Eligible applicants are given preference throughout the hiring process, including additional points on qualifying exams or priority in non-exam-based hiring. When candidates are equally qualified, veterans will be given preference.
Additional Benefits for Veterans
The City may waive certain postsecondary education requirements for qualified veterans applying for non-exempt positions.
Supporting Documentation
Supporting documents must be furnished to the City’s Human Resources office by the “Closing Date” indicated on the position posting/advertisement.
Filing a Complaint
If an eligible applicant believes they were not properly considered, they may file a complaint with the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs within 60 days of the hiring decision. Veteran’s Preference Coordinator, 11351 Ulmerton Road, Suite 311, Largo, Florida, 33778-1630.
