Homestead Establishes Emergency Disaster Supply Delivery Assistance for Elderly & Disabled Residents

City of Homestead News Posted on September 17, 2024

On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, the City of Homestead City Council passed Resolution No. R2024-08-100 aimed at providing disaster assistance to elderly and disabled residents during a declared State of Emergency. If a location is established for distributing emergency supplies—such as sandbags, water, and/or bags of ice—priority delivery will be provided to elderly and disabled individuals who are preregistered and unable to access the distribution sites. The program is operated in coordination with city staff and members of the City's various boards, ensuring delivery of supplies to vulnerable residents.

During emergency events such as natural disasters, the City typically establishes distribution locations for emergency supplies like sandbags, ice, and bottled water. Recognizing that many elderly and disabled residents are unable to travel to these sites, the City Council has introduced the Emergency Elderly and Disabled Disaster Assistance Program to ensure residents receive the critical items they need during times of emergency.

Elderly and disabled residents are required to pre-register for the program, which ensures that in the event of a declared State of Emergency, such as a hurricane, essential supplies are delivered directly to those who are unable to retrieve them in person.

Once the program is enacted, it will operate under guidelines established by the City Manager, who is authorized to take necessary measures during an emergency. The resolution reflects Homestead's ongoing commitment to protecting its most vulnerable citizens and ensuring their safety and well-being during emergency situations.
