At the February special council presentation, Councilwoman Jenifer Bailey presented the artists that were selected for the Artist in the Spotlight Black History Month exhibition at the Seminole Theatre. The Gallery Night, held in collaboration with the Friends of the Seminole Theater, showcased the remarkable talent of local artists while reinforcing the city's commitment to fostering a thriving arts community and providing a platform for local artists to shine. During the presentation, Councilwoman Bailey emphasized the significance of celebrating Black History Month by inviting local artists to participate in the "Artist in the Spotlight" program. Artists were encouraged to submit work that highlighted black history, with selected pieces displayed in the Seminole Theatre lobby for two months. The program not only provided exposure for artists but also fostered community engagement through events like artist receptions and recognition at Homestead City Council meetings.
The Gallery Night, held on Thursday, February 22nd at 6:00 p.m., was an evening of exquisite art and cultural celebration. Attendees enjoyed delicious refreshments sponsored by the Friends of the Seminole Theater and a diverse display of artwork representing the rich tapestry of Homestead's artistic community. The event also featured a partnership with South Dade Connections, hosting a black business networking event alongside the gallery.
Councilwoman Bailey expressed gratitude to the participating artists, including Wanda Montas, Marcelle Latour, Claudia Mella, and Joseph Fischer, whose passion and dedication enriched the cultural landscape of Homestead. Their diverse backgrounds and artistic mediums contributed to a vibrant celebration of Black History Month.
About the Artist in the Spotlight Program
Councilwoman Jenifer N. Bailey championed the Artist in the Spotlight program, originally spearheaded by former Councilman Stephen R. Shelley. The program, created in 2010, highlighted the talents of local artists and allowed them to showcase their artwork to the community. Interested artists from Broward, Dade, or Monroe Counties were encouraged to contact Councilwoman Bailey’s office at (305) 224-4454 or jday@cityofhomestead.com. Preference was given to artists residing in or near the City of Homestead.
