The City of Homestead is proud to announce the swearing-in ceremony of its new Police Chief, Mario Knapp, set for January 3, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Homestead City Hall, located at 100 Civic Court, Homestead, FL 33030. Mario Knapp was appointed to this position by City Manager Zerry Ihekwaba and will officially begin his duties as Police Chief on January 1, 2025.
Mario Knapp brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished career in law enforcement to the position. A veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department with over 27 years of service, Chief Knapp is renowned for his operational expertise, exceptional leadership, and commitment to public safety. Throughout his career, he has led both uniformed and specialized units, trained officers at all levels, and contributed significantly to the development of critical protocols for mass casualty events and active shooter situations. Notably, he played a pivotal role as the Command Post Incident Commander during the Surfside building collapse, where he coordinated emergency response efforts and supported the affected community.
This transition also marks the conclusion of the extraordinary tenure of current Police Chief Alexander E. Rolle, Jr., whose contract expires on December 31, 2024. Chief Rolle has served the Homestead Police Department for more than 40 years, and in 1998, he made history as the first African American to serve as Chief of Police in Homestead. His leadership and dedication have left an indelible mark on the department and the community, setting a strong foundation for the future.
